BATAVIA — The 49th annual Batavia/Attica Holiday Tournament provided plenty of excitement over the weekend, as the host Blue Devils grappled their way to a second-place finish, behind champion Canisteo-Greenwood, which finished the meet with four individual champions.
The Blue Devils saw two athletes finish atop the podium, with Casper Stewart claiming first place at 152 pounds following a pin of C-G’s Colton Havens in the final whichtook 3:42. Wyatt Kauffman also earned a first-place finish for Batavia/Attica, defeating Williamsville’s Max Smith by decision, 5-0. Wyatt Bryman was the lone Blue Devils wrestler to take second, falling to Red Jacket’s Hasen Wetherbee, 9-2, in the 132-pound final.
Letchworth also had one of its wrestlers claim a title, with Derek Smith defeating Austin Hall, 4-0, at 126 pounds for the first-place finish. Letchworth’s Chris Shearing finished as a runner-up ay 160 pounds, falling to C-G’s Beau Zeh in 43 seconds. Joe Scott also claimed a second-place finish for the Indians, falling by a 10-6 decision to Williamsville’s Tanner Catrabone at 102 pounds.
Livonia’s T.J. Gause finished second at 285 pounds, falling to Victor’s Ty Rader in 5:39.
Livonia’s Ady West picked up a championship win at the Penfield wrestling tournament within the 120-pound weight class, finishing with five pins which took a combined 5:02 of mat time. For her effort, West was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Livonia’s Destiny Latimer also had a strong showing, finishing second at 126 pounds with three pins on the day.
DANSVILLE/WAY-COH COMPETES IN ARKPORT-CANASERAGA
The Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton wrestling team competed in Akport-Canaseraga’s annual holiday dual meet tournament on Saturday, coming away with a third-place finish after defeating four of five opponents, including LCAA foe Avon/Geneseo in the final match. The third-place finish is the best D/W-C has finished at the Arkport dual tournament in the past several years.
“I’m super proud of how well this young team is doing. Especially how much they are growing,” said D/W-C head coach Justin Walker. “My coaches and I are pouring ourselves into this program day in and day out to make sure these young athletes gain speed for the near future. But it takes time and patience in this sport. You can’t learn this amazing sport overnight. We are so so proud of all of our wrestlers and their commitment on and off the mat, especially in helping in the community.”
D/W-C started the day off against a strong Hornell team, falling 48-28, but soon rebounded with a 42-36 win over Bath-Haverling. Next up was Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen, which Dansville/Way-Coh ushered past, 60-18, to set up a matchup with Alfred-Almond, which D/W-C won convincingly, 58-15. In the battle for third and fourth place, D/W-C defeated Avon/Geneseo, 39-36, with Jackson Zangerle’s pin at 132 pounds helping push D/W-C over the top for the slim victory.
“The team showed great heart and adversity being such a young inexperienced group, having 21 athletes in their sophomore year or lower,” said Walker, whose team also consists of 20 athletes who are either brand new to the sport or second-year wrestlers.
Dansville/Way-Coh outscored its opponents in its victories by a margin of 199-105, with Wyatt Sartori, Zangerle, Brandon Foster, and Aaron Mehlenbacher each finishing the day unbeaten. Isaac Kurtz, Kaiden Ellis and Elijah Bender were all critical to D/W-C’s solid effort.
PERRY SHOWS WELL IN CAMPBELL-SAVONA
The Yellowjackets competed at the 57th annual Campbell-Savona Holiday Tournament over the weekend, with Noah Leitten finishing as the team’s sole undefeated wrestler with a 5-0 record. Holden Kelly put forth a strong performance, finishing 4-1. Maddox Regatuso, Brady Kelly and Cooper Monteleone each finished the day 2-3. Kelly and Monteleones each picked up their first career wins. Perry struggled with only having five wrestlers, but came out with a win against Campbell Savona 24-18.
